Lotsa Lotlz, LLC Is a family owned and operated business. We are dedicated to breeding axolotls that are healthy and happy.
We fell in love with Axolotls with our first axolotl we adopted. Since then we have adopted 5 more axolotls and Nessie and Finn blessed us with babies. Thats all how Lotsa Lotlz got started.
We hope everyone falls in love with these amazing creatures with unique abilities and personalities, like we did!
Everything on this site is based on our opinion and experiences. You may find that other breeders may do things a little different than us, but that's okay. We just want your axolotl to have the best life possible.
Axolotls are an endangered aquatic salamander that is found only in Mexico. Also known as the Mexican Walking Fish.
Axolotls are unique as they can breathe in water using gills (Rami) that are on their neck and out of water using lungs (for a very short time).
Axolotls have the unique ability to regenerate their gills, tails, legs, feet, arms and parts of heart, spine and brain.
Axolotls are not legal in every state in the US.
Please make sure they are legal in your home state before adoption or purchasing an axolotl.

1. Cloacal Area: One of the most reliable ways to determine the sex of an axolotl is by looking at their cloacal region. Male axolotls typically have larger and more prominent cloacal pores compared to females. These pores are located near the base of the tail and can be seen as small bumps or dots.
2. Body Size: In general, male axolotls tend to be slightly larger and more robust than females. This difference in size is most noticeable when comparing adult axolotls, as males may have a longer body and larger head than females.
However, Its not always easy to determine the sex of your axolotl until the axolotl reaches sexual maturity, which happens from 6-18 months of age.
Environment
Axolotls need at least 20 gallons of conditioned water for each adult axolotl. 40 Gallons for two Adult Axolotls.
We recommend 20 or 40 Gallon Breeder tanks, These tanks give the axolotl more of a swimming area
Filtration
Axolotls can be messy; we recommend a pump filter for the appropriate size tank to help keep your axolotl's

Bubblers
Bubblers are a great source of oxygen for your axolotls, but keep in mind, axolotls can become stressed if the air flow is too rapid.
However, some axolotls love to play in their bubbler.
Axolotls are sensitive to ph levels, high-water temperatures and minerals in the water.

Tank temperatures:
Axolotl tanks temp should be stay in low to mid 60s, however temp up to 68 is acceptable but temps higher than 74 can cause stress, illness or even death of your axolotls.
PH Levels
Axolotl tanks should have a Ph level between 7.4-7.6.
axolotls can tolerate ph levels between 6.5-8 however anything outside the normal can lead to ammonia toxicity.
We recommend having a Ph level kits nearby to check levels as needed.
Gravel:
We DO NOT recommend gravel for your axolotl's tank; they could eat the gravel causing an impaction or death of your axolotl.
Sand:
Very fine sand can be used in your axolotl's tank: keep in mind sand can also cause impaction if your axolotls eat a large amount of sand.

Eyesight:
Axolotls have poor eyesight, which can cause them to mistake other axolotls and non-food items for food such as gravel or sand ect..
Lighting:
Axolotls are very sensitive to light and prefer a darker environment.
We recommend using dim lighting and provide hiding places for your axolotl to avoid the bright light and sun.
Impaction:
Can be caused by ingesting small stones, gravel or snails: which can cause the digestion system to not work properly and can cause death of your axolotl.
Stress:
Can be caused by untreated water, strong water flow and high -water temperatures.
Signs of Stress:
Some signs that your axolotl is stressed is lack of appetite, floating on

Signs of Stress:
Some signs that your axolotl is stressed is lack of appetite, floating on their side
forward -curled gills and curled tail.
Bubble Gut & Floating:
Although axolotls like to float from time to time, excessive floating can indicate there are bubbles in your axolotls gut. If it appears that they are unable to return to the bottom of the tank, floating to the surface against their will or appear to be distressed when floating; this may indicate that you need to check water temp or water ph levels
These are a few of the most common illnesses that can affect you axolotls' health.
If your Axolotl is not eating, lying on their side or look fuzzy (White spots that look like fungus) the may benefit from a tea bath.
Tea Bath- One cup of brewed BLACK TEA ( no flavors) per 1 gallon of Conditioned water
Shake well and make sure the water temp is around 64 degrees.
Let the axolotl stay in the Tea Bath for 15-20 mins 1-2 times a day for 3 days.
You can also add a bubbler for extra oxygen for your axolotl.
Be sure to separate the ill axolotl from the others to avoid others from getting sick.

Step 3. The male will deposit a spermatophore (a cone-shaped jelly mass with a sperm cap) by vigorously shaking his tail for a few seconds, then continue to deposit his spermatophore throughout the tank after courtship.
Step 4. The female then moves over the spermatophore while shaking her tail, as she picks up the spermatophore with her cloaca.
Step 5. The female axolotl will begin laying eggs in 1-2 days. The eggs will be surrounded by a slime that protects the growing axolotl larva.
Step 6. The babies will start hatching within 14-21 days.

Eggs enclosed in a mucus like jelly are laid by the female axolotl and are attached to different locations around the tank. Eggs will begin to hatch after 2-3 weeks.
